QUESTIONS CORNER
Send a question about Golf Playing Rules to the Secretary and he will try and answer it here.
1. What is an Air shot ?
An air shot is when a player makes a swing at their ball and misses completely.
Unfortunately it counts as a stroke and players should add one stroke to their score for every air shot.!!!!
2 What do I do if my ball is plugged/embedded in the fairway ?
Within the rules of golf a plugged lie is known as an embedded ball. The good news is that unless you are in a bunker or penalty area, you do now get relief without penalty. Under the pre-2019 rules, this was only the case if you were on the fairway or other closely mown areas. That has now been extended to include the general area – this means all areas of the course except the tee of the hole you are playing, bunkers, penalty areas and the putting green, although, of course, you may always lift and mark your ball if plugged on the putting green, and then repair the pitch mark.
3 What can I do if my ball is plugged in a bunker ?
If partially plugged you can try and hit it out from where it is with no penalty , if it is too deep or difficult, under the new 2019 rules for a 2 stroke penalty ( add 2 shots to your score) you can remove the ball on a line from the flag and then play it from outside the bunker, or for a one shot penalty you can take lateral relief or on line keeping the ball in the bunker ( ie the ball remains in the bunker )
4. What do I do If I hit another players ball or the wrong ball ?
If you have hit the wrong ball you must add 2 strokes to your score and find and play the correct ball. If your own ball is lost you must add 2 strokes to your score.
This in fact happened to your Secretary in the November Stableford . It is best to mark your ball and then it is helpful to remember what ball you are actually playing.
The standard penalty for playing the wrong ball during stroke play is the loss of two strokes. The actual strokes taken with the wrong ball do not count on the golfer’s score. A player who hits the wrong ball must correct the mistake by finding and playing their legal ball, or substituting a new ball. If the player doesn’t correct the mistake before teeing off on the next hole, or fails to announce the intention to do so before leaving the last green, they are disqualified.
5 What is unplayable ball ?
A player can deem that their ball is unplayable anywhere on the course except in a hazard area. It is up to the player to decide.
For one penalty stroke you can either play the ball again from where you originally hit it or take up to 2 club lateral distance relief or back on line relief. If the ball is in a hazard you must observe the rules for that hazard.
Iain Baguley found his ball in an unplayable lie on hole 13 during the November Stableford (See Pic)

6 Can I play a provisional ball in SBGS GOLF ?
In brief there is no real necessity to play provisional balls in SBGS Golf, as our rules cater for the situations where they might be needed.
The differences between V&A Golf and SBGS Golf are explained below :
In V&A Golf a provisional ball must be played from the position that the player´s original ball was played. .This would be done when the player suspects that his ball is lost or out of bounds. The player must declare that it is a provisional ball, and describe the ball. For a lost ball the player then has 3 minutes from arriving at the area where the ball was thought to have been lost to find the original ball, and is permitted to play his provisional until reaching that approximate position. Once he plays his provisional past that supposed point (as agreed by playing partners), his original ball will not be in play and cannot come back into play. i.e. He must continue with the provisional. In V&A Golf a player who puts his ball out of bounds must retake the shot from the original position from where the shot was taken under penalty of 1 stroke ( Ie 3rd shot if Tee shot went oob )
Once 3 minutes have elapsed for a lost ball the original is not in play and must be abandoned.
In SBGS Golf whilst the player still has the choice or not of playing a provisional ball they are not really necessary at all. The SBGS Rules allow for both out of bounds and lost ball situations. Where a player hits his ball out of bounds they may elect to take a penalty drop where the ball crossed the out of bounds limit and play a substitute ball ie This would be the 3rd shot if it went out of bounds from the tee. Under SBGS Rules when a player loses a ball they may play a penalty shot with a substitute ball from the approximate position where the ball was lost and must do so if the original is not found within 3 minutes. This would be the 3rd shot if lost from the tee shot. Should the player then subsequently find the original ball it cannot be brought back into play and the substitute ball will be the ball in play.
A substitute ball played under the SBGS rules is not a provisional; it is a replacement ball and once in play the original cannot come back into play.
SBGS Rules allow for speedier play , are much more generous than the V&A Golf rules negating the necessity to play provisionals or having to go back to retake shots when the original cannot be found.
